Lunch & Learn Perspective by Karen Marki

A Holistic Response to the Threat of Domestic and Social Violence towards Children & Youth in Squatter Settlements in Peru

One of the most interesting and rewarding aspects of international development work is the opportunity we get to learn about other countries and organizations; their mission, history, strengths and challenges.

However, our busy schedules often keep us focused on our own work and we can lose our feeling of connection with the broader development community.

A perfect remedy for the “silo” virus is the recently launched “Lunch and Learn” series hosted by BCCIC.  The second event was held on Friday October 14th.  A friendly group of international development folks got together over sandwiches and sushi to learn about the work that Food for the Hungry (FH) is doing in Peru

The presentation, given by their Peruvian Country Director Ryan Smedes, was titled A Holistic Response to the Threat of Domestic and Social Violence towards Children and Youth in Squatter Settlements in Peru.

Ryan talked about their surprise at finding out that, when polled, violence surfaced as the top concern for women and children living in informal settlements in Peru.  In response, the FH staff created a new approach to engaging and serving the community with a focus on violence prevention and education.

Ryan shared a touching story of a family that had been deeply impacted by violence and how, through counselling and support from FH and the community, had pulled through.

A lively discussion ensued and many ideas and resources were shared.  Everyone left feeling like they had learned something new and had also made a few friends along the way!   Thanks to BCCIC for hosting and Ryan for his candid and inspiring words.
