Vancouver – Countdown to Zero, the acclaimed documentary film about the nuclear threat from the team behind an Inconvenient Truth, opens in Vancouver on Friday, September 10th at the Ridge Theater, 3131 Arbutus Street. Produced by Academy Award winner Lawrence Bender and Participant Media, the film will build support for the Global Zero movement to eliminate all nuclear weapons.
The international, non-partisan Global Zero movement (globalzero.org) includes 300 political, military, faith and civic leaders and more than 400,000 citizens working for the phased, verified elimination of all nuclear weapons worldwide.
“Countdown to Zero serves as a wake-up call about the urgency of the nuclear threat – and leaves no doubt that the only solution is the total elimination of all nuclear weapons,” said Dr. Jennifer Allen Simons, who is a founding partner and the principal sponsor of Global Zero and president of The Simons Foundation in Vancouver. “I hope everyone will see this stunning film when it comes to Vancouver on Friday – and will be inspired to join the Global Zero movement.”
Bands from around the world have lent their support, promoting the film and the Global Zero movement, including Trent Reznor, Pearl Jam, R.E.M., Tom Morello, BoDeens, Weezer, Circa Survive, Amigos Invisibles, Okgo Nortec, Meier Hawthorne, Michael Franti, They Might be Giants, Ozomatli, Mexican Institute of Sound, Lotus, Fanfarloo, Jay Electronica, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Entrance Band, The Gossip and Margaret Cho.
Countdown to Zero, which is being distributed in Canada by VVS, traces the history of the atomic bomb from its origins to the present state of global affairs: nine nations possessing nuclear weapons capabilities with others racing to join them, with the world held in a delicate balance that could be shattered by an act of terrorism, failed diplomacy, or a simple accident. Written and directed by acclaimed documentarian Lucy Walker (The Devil’s Playground, Blindsight), the film features an array of important international statesmen, including President Jimmy Carter, Mikhail Gorbachev, Pervez Musharraf and Tony Blair. It makes a compelling case for the worldwide elimination of all nuclear weapons – Global Zero. The film was produced by Academy Award® winner Lawrence Bender (Inglourious Basterds, An Inconvenient Truth) and developed, financed and executive produced by Participant Media, together with the World Security Institute. Jeff Skoll, Diane Weyermann, Bruce Blair and Matt Brown are the film’s executive producers.
