Development Lessons from Conflict and Post-Conflict Zones: Growing a Country in the Midst of Crisis

Wednesday, February 3, 2010 - 3:00pm - 6:00pm

University of the Fraser Valley Auditorium

In collaboration with Mennonite Central Committee, Food for the Hungry, CIDA, BC Council for International Cooperation and the University of the Fraser Valley

Panel Discussion (3-4:30pm): Three expert panelists will present some hard-won lessons from their experiences of the successes and failures of implementing sustainable development initiatives within a context of violence, natural disaster, political unrest, etc. This is not a presentation about emergency aid, but rather the reconstruction and aftermath of building peace, security, infrastructure and capacity during or after a crisis. The panelists are from Mennonite Central Committee, Food for the Hungry Canada and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

Global Café (4:30-6pm): An “open space” program will facilitate participants through a process of forming small groups to attend up to 3 “mini-presentations” by various actors with experience in the fields of reconstruction, peace-building and sustainable development. This format will allow for more direct discussions with the presenters and offer a wider variety of presentation styles and topics.
