Embassy Article - September 2011: Expect CIDA minister, debate to have low profile – but watch behind the scenes

A very interesting article in the Embassy that I wanted to share:

Parliament is unlikely to spend much time debating international development this fall. That does not mean, however, that there won't be important decisions to make behind the scenes regarding Canadian aid policy.

And that’s a Wrap for the Summer, Folks! #devdrinks

It was a full house on June 2nd at the Blarney Stone for International Development Drinks’ last event of the summer! Average attendance since September 2010 has been over 140 people (wow, actually, that’s a lot). Thank you so much to everyone who volunteered their time, to those who took the time to give a presentation, as well as those who made the trek downtown through the rain so we could see your lovely faces!

What is Development Effectiveness?

What is Development Effectiveness?

What is the relationship between Aid Effectiveness and Development Effectiveness?

BCCIC recently participated at a national Forum on Civil Society Development Effectiveness hosted by the Canadian Council for International Cooperation. I wanted to share some of my thoughts on the current events on the global scene. This is especially relevant as we  start our new three year program - and yes, BCCIC has received funding for 2011-2014 from CIDA. We hosted a memberhsip meeting and our first lunch and learn and I wanted to share the discussion and documents presented with  all of you.

In the last five years, governments, official donors, and civil society organizations have been attempting to define how to improve the impact and quality of development processes globally.  Country governments and donors have signed on to “The Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness” (March 2005) and “The Accra Agenda for Action” ( AAA) (September 2008). Civil society organizations were recognized in the AAA and there was a commitment ‘to work with CSOs to provide an enabling environment that maximizes their contributions to development’.

Learning Circle on the Great Lakes Region in Africa

We experimented with a different way to network and learn during a learning circle with members, partners and individuals working in the Great Lakes Region. 12 different organizations implementing programs in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo came together to explore issues of collaboration, how we choose our partners, and public engagement in Canada around our work.

"Canada, Where Are You?"

We're not the only ones asking this question. The events that unfolded at the UN Security Council begs the same question. The Africa Canada Accountability Coalition is bringing you a chance to look at options and formulate ideas on Canada's relationship to the continent of Africa, and specifically, the Great Lakes Region of Africa. November 2nd - see you there, physically or virtually!

Public Engagement: Deliberative Dialogues

Ten members and partners of BCCIC from Prince George, Kamloops, the Comox Valley, Victoria & Vancouver gathered over 3 days in October to take part in an intensive training workshop on "How to Facilitate a Deliberative Dialogue". It was an in-depth process that is part of BCCIC's journey in supporting our regional partners with their public engagement work. The intention was to share with them a new PE tool, that would help them further engage their local communities in global issues and the work of their organizations.
